Hi All Music Friends, Lovers, and Players,
I am writing to let everyone know about a new venue for some straight ahead jazz in Northampton. Call us crazy (I know I do), but Dave Shapiro (bass), Jon Fisher (drums) and I are attempting to start a steady Tuesday night scene in Northampton. Jim at the Green St. Cafe has graciously agreed to sponsor and support us in this effort. For the time being we are calling it "The Jazz Workshop" at the Green St. Cafe and it will happen every Tuesday night from 7:30-10PM and we will start up on April 6th. The plan is to feature the trio with occasional featured guest vocalists, instrumentalists, and tap dancers for the first set and then open it up to an organized jam session for the rest of the night. We may even have theme nights to feature certain composers, styles, concepts, etc.
Our hope is to create a real vital scene where young players will get a chance to play with more seasoned players in room full of other musicians and audience that are engaged, discerning, and supportive. The club is bringing in a newer piano and we will have a sound system available. We are planning on asking for a "suggested" donation of $5 at the door. There may also be a couple of lower priced snack plates and drinks available to make it easier for folks to come every week to hang, play, and listen. I'm sure whatever Jim and the chef come up with will be absolutely GREAT.
It is my feeling that to make this "jazz" music really happen, the notes and rhythms we play need to be relevant and important to the moment and our hope is to create, with everyone's help, a space where that intent and attitude can flower.
